Finchley originates from Saxon times. The estates of Fulham, to which
Finchley belonged, were granted to the Bishops of London in around
the 700's and remained with them until modern times.
The Finchley triangle sits on land pushed south by the last ice age.
Finchley remained a working, rural community, dependent mainly on farming
and servicing the needs of London and its travellers until swallowed
up by the expansion of London in the late 1800's. It became the Borough
of Finchley in 1933 but is now part of the London Borough of Barnet.
There were in fact three communities - formerly Church End, East End
and North End, one at each corner of the triangle, and these communities
have retained their own special identity.
Now much of East Finchley is built over, however it is surrounded by
green areas which contribute significantly to the quality of life.
